Top: The Green Roll (Chelsea Markets, NYC) - black rice with grilled haricot vert, roasted okra, green slaw (kale, parsley, & roasted sesame), dusted with porcini mushrooms; with white miso sauce.
Bottom: Beyond Sushi (Union Square, NYC) - ‘verde’ vegan sushi salad bowl (romaine lettuce, asparagus, avocado, spicy cashews, seaweed salad, marinated carrots and sliced nori; sweet soy mirin sauce); ‘Pickle Me’ roll (six grain rice, gobo, carrot, pickled daikon, avocado; carrot ginger sauce); watermelon lemonade.
Friday Food Review
We visited the Green Roll/Beyond Sushi a couple of times when we visited NYC in September last year. It’s a vegan joint, which I think forces the chefs to use ingredients more creatively. I really loved the black rice roll (top photo) and the way they packaged the miso mayo sauce in those little squeezable test tube looking things.
Concluding note: As usual with vegan fare we didn’t feel quite satiated after our meal. I think without animal protein my satiation signals (ghrelin) take longer to kick in - like I’d have to eat double the volume of food I usually do. It’s not a criticism of this place though - it’s just the way I am! In a place like NYC it could even be a good thing we weren’t quite full because it meant we had more space to eat more. Specifically, Itizy ‘handcrafted’ ice-cream and Bon Chon Korean fried chicken. Did we end up bingeing? Yes, yes we did…
